Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tahnik?

Tahnik is a Sunnah practice performed on newborns, where a small portion of a softened date is gently rubbed onto the baby’s palate. It is often accompanied by the shaving and weighing of the baby’s hair, followed by du’a for the child’s health, blessings, and guidance.

Tahnik is best performed as early as possible after birth, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who carried out this practice for newborns brought to him shortly after they were born.

Our Tahnik service is offered free of charge as a gift to families in our community. Donations to the mosque are always welcome but never required.
